The BIRT program is a constellation of innovative laboratories with stimulating faculty and spirited fellows. It provides young researchers interested in biomedical informatics with ample opportunities to explore and mature as scientists and clinicians. I entered the program upon the introduction of my long-time mentor, but very quickly I was surrounded by new faces that were not only friendly but also took interest in seeing me plow forward in the field. During my training, I hope to better understand blood glucose management for critically-ill patients and to devise resources for effective glycemic control in the intensive care unit.
